Future Trends & Technology for Your Integration Infrastructure
Integration is now the #1 IT expense category at many enterprises and new complexities increase the burden on Service Delivery, CI/CD, IBM MQ administration, and other “integration professionals” every day. Your enterprise has Microservices, Mobile, Mainframes, Cloud, and more applications and application updates than you can count and it takes the routing of transactions, messages and more through a rapidly growing integration infrastructure layer to make it all work together. That is now a trend.
Since you probably work with the complex integration infrastructure (i2) layer of IBM MQ, MFT (managed file transfer), Cloud middleware, etc., at your enterprise. You may not be surprised by the results of a recent poll of enterprise IT “integration management” professionals:
While IT and consulting services spending on the i2 layer has increased dramatically, spending on staff and tooling to support that area has remained flat (or even gone down) over time and that is increasing the risk of an outage, slow-downs, or worse that will ultimately be blamed on the Service Delivery, Shared Services, messaging middleware, or other understaffed teams. Those are trends too.
The disconnect between i2 spending and a lack of corresponding resourcing to support the integration layer is caused by many factors but these two are the most common:
- “Integration Infrastructure” spending is not currently part of one budget line or area like “Cloud” or “Mobile,” so senior management doesn’t see that is now 25% or 35% of the IT budget. It is spread across different budget lines, as is any spending on tools to manage this critical layer of the IT stack.
- Senior strategy decision-makers and “business” leaders often don’t yet understand how critical this layer is to successfully execute their IT Transformation, CX (customer experience), or Innovation plans (or how much risk comes with under-resourcing the management of the i2 layer).
To see how much complexity enterprises with IBM MQ in their i2 layer were dealing with in messaging middleware alone, we polled them on what other products they were also managing or evaluating to add to their i2 middleware estates:
More complexity is clearly on the way across the Cloud and data center integration infrastructure (i2) layer, and we’re not even including the growth of REST API, IoT, Blockchain, and other i2 elements.
The good news is that some enterprises, industry experts, and other thought leaders are starting to understand these concepts and interrelationships and are looking at “integration” as a key part of IT Transformation and Innovation plans, including how to manage and extract insights from this layer through which nearly all transactions and customer-relevant data now flow.
Other good news includes that your enterprise peers may have already addressed some of the complex and emerging problems you are now facing every day, including transaction and message tracking, bringing new customer applications to market quickly, and efficient management and control of bourgeoning IBM MQ, other messaging middleware, and other elements of your growing i2 estate.
If you’d like to learn more about these trends and about technologies from i2 and i2 management (i2M) vendors to address key “integration” trends, problems, and complexities that come with them for enterprises like yours, join us for this webinar on October 27, 2021 at 11am ET and continue the discussion:
